Exploring Boston For the past few weeks, Ive REALLY wanted to go to Red Mango.  I really like frozen yogurt, and at home the first nearby frozen yogurt place was Red Mango, so my friends and I would call going to get frozen yogurt going to get Red Mango.  Sadly, the closest Red Mango to MIT is kind of far away.  That is, it is about a mile and a half down Massachusetts Avenue (living in East Campus, the closest dorm to classes, we have a really bad sense of what is near and far from us).  But today is a beautiful day and the sun is shining, so I really REALLY wanted to go to Red Mango. I begged and begged my boyfriend to come get Red Mango with me, but he fell asleep and said he had too much work to do.   Frozen yogurt is more important than work or sleep, but he doesnt understand. So I stormed off to Red Mango by myself, and I had a wonderful opportunity to explore Boston on this beautiful day. There were people running and biking and walking alongside me across the Harvard Bridge, the sailboats were gliding along the Charles River, and I got to go deeper into Boston along Massachusetts Avenue than I have for a while. I saw some really pretty sights along the way.   There was the First Church of Christ Scientist and it looked like a huge capital building or something.   I also saw the Boston Symphony Orchestra Symphony Hall, which was also incredibly beautiful.  There is an orchestra playing pieces from Fantasia in early May at the hall and I definitely want to look into seeing that or another concert at some point during my time at MIT. Anyways, the trip, although it started off sad and lonely, grew into an awesome journey through Boston and a look at some pretty sweet buildings.   Also, I got a really good strawberry banana smoothie, even if this Red Mango wasnt nearly as nice as the ones back home (it wasnt even self-serve =[ ).  And on the way home across the Bridge, my friend Emma S. 16 ran into me (she was actually going for a run along the river when she saw me) and we got to catch up on things. So all in all, it was a nice trip on a nice day. On a rather unrelated note. I AM OFFICIALLY AN MIT TOUR GUIDE!! Now, when you come to take a tour of MIT, I might be giving it to you!! Come say hi!! While being somewhat autobiographical, the story is related to the reader by a seaman, who collects the tale from one of his fellows on a ship as they sale away from London. The first-hand experience is that of Charlie Marlow, who is inspired to tell his story by the London skyline, as he describes it as also one of the dark places of the earth, (p. 67). The other dark place that Marlow is referring to is the African jungle. For several pages, Marlow tells his fellows about the inner jungle as he and his steamboat entered it (105-8). These pages set the mood of the jungle sequences, provide Marlow with the adventure and the answers that he has been pursuing, suggesting some major themes of the novel.The journey into the jungle describes the dark, mysterious, and isolated setting in which the reader will meet Kurtz. Through descriptions of rioting vegetation, and implacable, vengeful silence (106), the reader begins to feel small and threatened, truly understanding how uncivilized and wild the jungle seems to the white Europeans who search through it. The images of the dark trees and the black natives perpetuate the darkness in the mood. Even the light that is described is not comforting; There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine, (105). Conrad also conveys an amount of danger present in the jungle as Marlow relates the careful attention he had given to snags, stones, the shore, and anything else that might sink the steamer. Conrad creates a feeling of mystery by involving magical imagery. He describes the white men, who come to greet the passing steamer, as having the appearance of being held there captive by a spell, (107), and the natives as performing strange, magical rituals (108). The feeling of isolation is continued in Conrads comparison of the steamer to a sluggish beetle overwhelmed as it trundles through the dense foliage,Trees, trees, millions of trees, massive, immense running up high; and at their foot, hugging the bank against the stream, crept the little begrimed steamboat, like a sluggish beetle crawling on the floor of a lofty portico. (107)Later, the jungle is described as closing in behind the steamboat as it travels further inside, which also adds to the mood of isolation.As the steamer trundles along, Marlows quest for adventure and truth further emerges in the jungle. Marlow is taken with the realities of the jungle. However, he confesses he does not understand them, and ironically, he shies away from it. The jungle only hints at the realities it presents, while the inner truth is hidden, (106). This perception of the concealed truth is developed further by Conrads descriptions of the impenetrable forest, (105) as if the jungles secrets were kep t behind the wall of trees. Marlow describes the outside world in contrast to the jungle,it came in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream, remembered with wonder amongst the overwhelming realities of this strange world it was the stillness of an implacable force it looked at you with vengeful aspect (106)Marlow escapes the uncomfortable silence only by doing his practical, commonplace tasks to ensure the safety of the steamer and the passengers. He calls them monkey tricks, as if the silent jungle that holds the truth is mocking these supposedly important tasks from the outer world. Marlow admits that, because he is part of a civilized, advanced society, he cannot comprehend the reality that the jungle is offering, We were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings we could not understand because we were too far and could not remember because we were traveling in the night of the first ages, (108). This bewilderment is also exhibited when the drums of the natives break t he silence of the jungle. Marlow cannot understand what is meant by the drums, and thereby is missing the essence of the jungle; the heart beat of the heart of darkness. In this way, Marlows journey is further defined and motivated by the mysteries and hints that the jungle provides him.The jungles primordial and isolated description suggests the theme of the natural essential nature of man. Conrads text states that man has a natural lust for domination, which is expressed covertly within the laws of society. Those who are out of societys reach (a policeman, a neighbor), are free to utilize this lust outright, as Kurtz does. This is the truth that the jungle implies and that Kurtz exemplifies.However, Kurtzs genius is not in this utilization of his natural desire but in his acknowledgement of that desire in its bare, unmasked state, and of that desire in others. Conrad indicating a raw, essential aspect of the setting, refers to the jungle and its inhabitants as pre-historic, We were wanderers on a pre-historic earth (108). This introduces the t heme of mans natural state, and, as mentioned before, the way society creates an impediment to this natural state. Conrads description of the primal setting turns the jungle into a wild, elemental environment that allows a civilized man to utilize his primal desire for domination. The constant references to isolation perpetuate the idea of the jungle as a boundless place: You lost your way on that river as you would in a desert, and butted all day long against shoals till you thought yourself cut off for ever from everything you had known once (105). Through his depiction of the jungle, Conrad introduces the theme of mans natural state.As Marlow recounts his experience while traveling into the African jungle, he shares the mood, journey, and theme of the novel with his fellow seamen. With all these elements incorporated into it, the jungle setting is one of the most significant of all the settings in the novel, Heart of Darkness. It is this description that allows Conrad to set the mood for the rest of the novel, continue Marlows journey, and emphasize his commentary on man at the turn of the century.

A Ride through Prezi Prezi is like an amusement park. An amusement park is composed of various types of rides geared towards different family members. Firstly, the teacups or the bumper cars which are traditional games for everyone, or the simulators which are for the more adventurous ones and finally the roller coasters which are only for the ones who like adrenaline and danger. No matter what game a person likes to ride, every single time on the game is different, there are unexpected twists and turns and every person has different experiences while on the ride. Prezi, which is a new form of presentation that allows users to create ‘their own story’ within a white canvas and make it as creative and unique as they want, is geared towards everyone from middle school students to CEOs. The twist and turns in Prezi are found within the zooming options and paths created by the presenter and so far there have been mixed reviews as to how efficient and effective Prezi is for people. In my opinion, Prezi is an innovative, complex and fun software available to everyone around the world and can come in handy when trying to be original. Prezi was available to the public in early 2009, but many people are still unaware of its existence. About 80% of the students in my technical communication class had no idea what it was, even though college students are supposed to be technology savvy. As the mission statement says, â€Å"it is a way to make sharing ideas more interesting. † It is one of a kind and is cloud-based, which makes it easily accessible to anyone with internet access all over the world. The most innovative part of Prezi is the Zooming User Interface, ZUI, which enables the users to zoom in and out of the presentations and clearly show which ideas are more important than others. These clearly innovative applications are great for someone who is well acquainted with Prezi, but for first time users it might seem a bit overwhelming and confusing at first. Prezi is complex, but as a really common quote says â€Å"the best things in life are not easy, but they are worth it. † In order to be able to create a good Prezi, time needs to be invested. The first time I used Prezi, it was spring term 2011 for my Management Information Systems class. One of my group members had just found out about Prezi and suggested we used it for our presentation in order to stand out. We all thought it was a great idea, but we didn’t know how time consuming it would be. We went to the website, created an account and started with our first Prezi. There is a mandatory tutorial for anyone who is creating their first Prezi. I think it is an excellent thing because it introduces some key words like pan and zoom, Prezi zebra, frame and path. Prezi zebra being the most important one because it is the one that allows you to modify the size, rotate and delete any object (pictures, words, videos, etc. ) in the canvas. The canvas is the rectangle that Prezi gives you to create your presentation and the frames are the spaces where information is grouped together and the path is the sequence of frames in your Prezi. Even after going through the tutorials it was difficult to fully understand the concept of every function available and how best to take advantage of the whole software, so we watched the additional videos available in the website. It personally took me about two to three hours to completely understand the software, its advantages, disadvantages, and all the functions, but the time invested pays off every time I create a new Prezi and I am able to efficiently and effectively create a presentation. For people who are not willing to fully acquaint themselves with the software before using it, it might seem complicated and overwhelming, because it is clearly a great change from PowerPoint, which everyone is used to using. Once people do get to know and understand the software, they can have fun every single time they use it. Every Prezi is different; this is because every person has different ideas and different ways to show them in a presentation. There are some preselected themes and combination of colors available as well as some diagrams and flow of ideas, but other than that every single person is able to do it as original as they want. This is my favorite part about Prezi, it allows you to think outside the box. Information can be presented in either a linear, like PowerPoint, or a non-linear way. Text, images, videos, PowerPoint slides, Excel worksheets, PDFs, links, etc. an be imported and used in Prezi. There is even an option of browsing Google images within Prezi itself and copying the desired image into the presentation. As much as Prezi is fun because ideas can be spread over the canvas and creativity is encouraged, one does need to keep in mind that the presentation has to be organized, that zooming in and out repeatedly and going all over the canvas can produce headache and nausea for the audience and that too many pictures and turns can be distractive and overwhelming. With every Prezi I have created, I have liked how easy it is to import anything into it and have gotten better at organizing everything in a creative and cohesive way. My best recommendation for it is to group ideas together and use layouts so that visual stimulation is there, but it adds to the presentation rather than damages it. Prezi is definitely a software worth checking out, especially if you are the type of person, like me, who likes being different and knowing about new things available. As a college student, I think it is definitely important to know about the multiple useful and innovative software available, specially because technology is increasing at such a fast pace and no one knows what the future for presentations is going to be. Maybe someday Prezi or a similar program will become the new PowerPoint and being acquainted with it will definitely be a huge advantage.
